At the Crease has become one of this country’s defining works of art, and has been generously loaned to the Gallery by a private collector and friend of Danby to honour the artist’s legacy. The work will be displayed until the AGO closes on October 7.
“Ken had a grand ambition to be Canada’s painter,” says Matthew Teitelbaum, the AGO’s Michael and Sonja Koerner director, and CEO. “He painted the great Canadian icons and scenes from our daily lives – the epic to the everyday. He created personal connections to the Canadian landscape. Ken was among Canada’s great storytellers.”
Born in Sault Ste. Marie in 1940, Danby trained at the Ontario College of Art. In a career spanning five decades, Danby created works that earned him the reputation as one of the world’s foremost realist artists. A recipient of both the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario, Danby’s works can be found in the collections of many leading arts institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Art, and the AGO.
