Cinematheque Ontario's summer season is on now through August 23, with a rich and varied selection of cinema's finest classics from around the world. Programs include:

  • A tribute to the Kawakita Memorial Film Institute in Japan, comprised of 24 Japanese classics such as Shohei Imamura's Vengeance is Mine, Nagisa Oshima's Violence at Noon and Sumiko Haneda's Akiko – Portrait of a Dancer
  • A retrospective of the films of Italian master Luchino Visconti, featuring the majestic family sagas of The Leopard (starring Burt Lancaster and Claudia Cardinale) and Rocco and His Brothers, the languid Death in Venice, Conversation Piece and The Innocent
  • A series that compares the works of two geniuses of cinema, Alain Resnais and Alain Robbe-Grillet (collaborators on Last Year at Marienbad), including Mon Oncle d'Amérique (with Gérard Depardieu), L'Homme qui ment and Stavisky...
  • Friday, August 22, 7 pm: An evening with Veronica Tennant, one of Canada's best and most versatile ballerinas, and Dame Antoinette Sibley. Join them at a special screening of The Turning Point (starring Shirley MacLaine, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Antoinette Sibley), after which Veronica will delve into the career and life of Dame Sibley before opening the floor to questions from the audience. All ages welcome.

Fringe Benefits: Cosmopolitan Dynamics of a Multicultural City

This exhibition is curated by Ian Chodikoff, editor of Canadian Architect magazine and an architect and urban designer who is intent on presenting ideas and questions that will influence the future identity of our suburbs – a geography constantly evolving into something much more dynamic than big-box retail outlets and housing subdivisions. The exhibition will discuss the relationships between social networks, social capital, social exclusion, economic disparity and entrepreneurial activities found among the various built environments across the GTA.

The Art of Clairtone

This exhibition pays tribute to the talented designers behind Clairtone and presents approximately 70 artifacts, including hi-fi consoles, furniture, fashion, archival photographs and original advertisements. The exhibit also includes a multimedia component featuring interviews with the founders and clips from Hollywood films.

In the 1960s Clairtone Sound Corporation captured the spirit of the times: sophisticated, cosmopolitan, liberated. Famously, Hugh Hefner owned a Project G. So did Frank Sinatra. Oscar Peterson affirmed that his music sounded as good on a G as it did live.

Battleground: War Rugs from Afghanistan

April 23, 2008 - January 27, 2009

The terror of bombs falling from the sky and landmines exploding from the earth is revealed in Battleground: War Rugs from Afghanistan. Through three decades of international and civil war, Afghans have borne witness to disaster by weaving unprecedented images of battle and weaponry into their rugs. This exhibition presents 118 rugs that tell the story of the Afghan world turned upside down.

Object Factory is the first major museum exhibition devoted to state-of-the-art industrial ceramic production and the impact of contemporary industry on craft, art and design. Curator Marek Cecula emphasizes the new relationship between artists, designers and manufacturers that “has heralded a vitality and fresh orientation to ceramic material.” Featuring more than 200 objects from 18 countries, the exhibition includes works by numerous well-known artists

Independence & Ingenuity: Freelance Porcelain Decorators in 18th Century Europe

March 14 - August 17, 2008

Most porcelains in 18th century Europe were decorated in the factories where they were made. A small number, however, were decorated by independent artists often working in home-based studios. Concentrated in Germany and Austria, the first European countries to produce true porcelain, these freelance decorators frequently created designs inspired by contemporary prints and paintings. The Gardiner Museum possesses one of the best collections of independently decorated porcelains in the world, which will be featured in this exhibition.

The Royal Botanical Gardens, Canada’s largest botanical garden, presents their popular summer music series of jazz, blues, classical and alternative music.
